The digital marketing world is a rapidly growing industry, and with more companies turning to online activities, it is not hard to see why. It is now essential for all companies to establish a strong digital presence. With a digital presence, comes the need for digital marketing skills.
So if you are thinking of pursuing a career in digital marketing, here are a few skills that will help you to be a success!
Skill 1: An Analytical Mind
As a whole, digital marketing is a hugely creative career. But while it is creative, the ability to be able to analyse numbers and understand data analytics is key. The huge growth to the digital marketing industry means that there are now huge amounts of data that are readily available. Tools such as Google Analytics and even built in insights such like Instagram’s Insights means digital marketers can now collect endless amounts of information from our consumers.
Understanding the data is one thing, but interpreting and drawing insights from it is a whole different thing. To be successful in the mad world of digital marketing, you need to have a good knowledge of your consumer behaviour, be able to identify any patterns, and know exactly how the data shapes your consumers into making the decisions they make. Being able to make comparisons, and use this data to make tweaks and improve on your methods is also an essential if you want your digital marketing campaigns to be effective.
Skill 2: Social Media Knowledge
Social media usage globally has been constantly increasing since 2011. More and more people are turning to social media, and especially with many countries being in lockdown, more and more businesses are turning to social media for their main source of advertising. After all, 90% of instagram accounts are following at least one business on Instagram (Sprout Social, 2020). Here are some statistics on social media usage, as an indication of why social media usage is so important:
So it’s no surprise really that understanding social media is essential. But, it’s not just about knowing social media. You need to be able to understand the importance of building a community, and engaging with your followers.
You also need to be able to stay up to date with the latest trends, know the latest platforms, and understand all new features that are introduced. More people than ever are on social media, and people are experts on social media just because of how long they spend on it daily. So digital marketers need to make sure they know just as much, preferably lots more, than the general public know about these social media channels!

Skill 3: Stalking your Audience
Ok… When I say stalking your audience I don’t literally mean you should stalk your audience. But you do need to know how to research your target audience. You need to be able know exactly who your audience is, what they like, what they don’t like, and you need to tailor everything you do to appeal to your target audience. The more research you do, and the more data you use, the more you will know about your target audience, and the more you will be able to appeal to them.
A great way of researching your audience is to create a customer persona. There is so much information surrounding customer persona’s, so expect a blog on that very soon!
To Sum Up…
Digital marketing is a hugely creative career, but it is not just creative. You also have to be analytical and possess a key understanding for interpreting data in order to be successful in digital marketing (in my opinion). So many people see digital marketing, particularly the social media side of it, as just creating aesthetic content and scrolling on Instagram all day. And a large part of it is.. but there is also so much more to it!
